History of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Tenth Sikh Guru
Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the tenth Guru of the Sikhs. He was born on December 22, 1666, in Patna Sahib (now in Bihar, India). His birth name was Gobind Rai, and his father was Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. His mother’s name was Mata Gujri Ji.
At the age of 9 years, Guru Gobind Singh Ji became the Guru after the martyrdom of his father in 1675. His father gave his life to protect religious freedom, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji continued his mission with great courage and wisdom.
Creation of the Khalsa
One of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s greatest contributions was the creation of the Khalsa on Vaisakhi day in 1699 at Anandpur Sahib.
He called thousands of Sikhs together and asked for five brave volunteers who were ready to give their lives for their faith. These five were called the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones). He baptized them with Amrit (holy water) and gave them a new identity.
The Khalsa was created to:
Stand for justice
Protect the weak
Live a pure, honest, and brave life
Guru Ji gave the Khalsa five symbols known as the 5 Ks:
1. Kesh (unshorn hair)
2. Kangha (wooden comb)
3. Kara (iron bracelet)
4. Kirpan (small sword)
5. Kachera (special undergarment)
He also ended the difference between high and low castes, making everyone equal in the eyes of God.
Warrior and Saint
Guru Gobind Singh Ji was not only a spiritual leader, but also a brave warrior, poet, and scholar. He fought many battles to defend the faith and protect innocent people. His entire family made sacrifices:
His father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, was martyred.
His mother, Mata Gujri Ji, and two younger sons (Sahibzade Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh) were martyred in Sirhind.
His two elder sons, Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh, died in battle.
Despite these losses, Guru Ji remained strong and encouraged others to never give up.
Final Teachings
Before passing away in 1708 at Nanded Sahib (in present-day Maharashtra), Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared that there would be no more human Gurus. He gave Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, the status of the eternal Guru.
He said: “Guru Maneyo Granth” – Accept the Guru Granth Sahib as your eternal Guru.
